RANI JAMBAK



Rani Jambak is a composer, producer, and vocalist of Minangkabau descent from Medan. After completing her Master of Creative Industries Studies at Macquarie University in Sydney, Rani started her solo career exploring electronic music and soundscape collected in various places in Indonesia.
Rani’s musical works often talk about socio-cultural and the relationship between humans and their ancestors through soundscapes. Her latest project, FUTUREANCESTOR, is her way of finding her cultural identity as Minangkabau, tracing the traces of Minangkabau ancestors and nature. This project has released “Suara Minangkabau – Darek”, “Orang Piaman”, and “Merantau (in progress) which played at the Indonesian Composers Week 2021.
Rani also pioneered the #FORMYNATURE project, an environmental campaign through music and collaborated with NGOs such as PPLH Bohorok and Orangutan Haven. The works in #FORMYNATURE also made Rani collaborate with cross arts.
Some of them are collaborations with fashion designer, Toton, in “As I stand in this trash garden” at the State of Fashion Exhibition in Arnhem, The Netherlands. Also “Eagle Reflection” with Waftlab, Sikukeluang, and Indri which was exhibited in Documenta Fifteen, Gottingen, Germany.
In the last 2 years, Rani has participated in several international residency programs such as Virtual Partner Residencies by the Goethe Institute, OneBeat, Mutual mentorship for Musicians, Open Contemporary Art Center Taiwan, and Musicians in Residence with Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival by the British Council.
On November 2022, Rani received The Oram Awards for International Category in innovation of sound, music, and technology which also held in HuddersfieldContemporary Music Festival 2022.
